Planning a Utah trip

Utah packs five national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef) into its southern half, linked by some of the best scenic driving in the country. Spring and fall are the prime windows: summer bakes the desert and winter brings ice to the high country. Whatever the season, the constants are sun protection, far more water than you expect, and footing for slickrock.

Getting around Utah

Salt Lake City is the main air hub for the north, while St. George and Las Vegas serve the southern parks. There is no useful transit between parks, so plan on a rental car and long, scenic drives. Distances are deceptive: Zion to Moab is about five hours, so most visitors pick two or three parks per trip rather than rushing all five.

Desert route logic

Build the trip around bases, heat, and shuttle friction.

Utah looks simple on a map, but the useful question is where each morning starts. Springdale, Moab, Torrey, Bryce Canyon City, and the east side of Zion all solve different problems.

Best window

April to May and September to October for the most comfortable desert hiking.

Base logic

Springdale for Zion, Moab for Arches and Canyonlands, Torrey for Capitol Reef.

Packing focus

Sun shirt, electrolytes, traction for winter shade, and more water capacity than you expect.

Trip shape

Give all five parks at least a week, or choose one cluster and slow down.

First Utah park trip

Choose Zion plus Bryce Canyon, or Moab plus Arches and Canyonlands. Both pair huge payoff with manageable drives.

Quieter Utah trip

Use Capitol Reef and the Highway 12 corridor when you want red-rock drama with fewer famous bottlenecks.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Mighty 5 national parks in Utah?

The Mighty 5 are Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands, all in southern Utah. They are often combined into a single road trip, though doing all five well takes about a week.

When is the best time to visit Utah's national parks?

Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer is very hot in the lower-elevation parks, and winter brings snow and ice to higher spots like Bryce Canyon.
