Road trip guide

Southwest canyon country road trip

The Colorado Plateau packs more national parks into a few hundred miles than anywhere else. This Grand Circle loop links Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol-country Utah at Arches and Canyonlands, then Mesa Verde and Petrified Forest on the way back.

Short answer

Fly into Las Vegas, loop counter-clockwise through Grand Canyon South Rim, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, and Petrified Forest, and fly out of Las Vegas or Phoenix. Budget 12 to 14 days for the full circle. Spring and fall are ideal; summer is hot in the lower canyons and monsoon storms bring flash-flood risk from July into September.

What makes the Grand Circle work

  • A loop, not an out-and-back: the parks ring the Four Corners, so you return near where you started.
  • Honest pacing: seven parks across the Colorado Plateau is a long trip, so two weeks beats trying to cram it into one.
  • A spring or fall window that keeps the desert hikeable and avoids peak monsoon flash-flood risk.
  • Moab as the central anchor for the Arches and Canyonlands pair, with Mesa Verde and Petrified Forest closing the loop south.

Grand Canyon

Best for
First 2 days, the South Rim, the Rim Trail, and a partial descent of Bright Angel
Watch
The inner canyon is far hotter than the rim, and shorter winter daylight surprises people. The remote North Rim closes in winter.

The South Rim is about 4.5 hours from Las Vegas and is the logical opener. Two nights cover the classic viewpoints, a sunset, and a controlled walk partway down into the canyon.

The Watchman, a sharply pointed red sandstone peak in Zion National Park, rising above the Virgin River and autumn cottonwoods at golden hourLeg 2: the slot canyons

Zion

Best for
Days 3 to 4, the Narrows, Emerald Pools, and the canyon shuttle
Watch
Use the mandatory canyon shuttle in season, and watch monsoon flash-flood forecasts before entering the Narrows.

Zion is about 4 hours from the Grand Canyon and an easy next stop heading north. Two nights in Springdale cover the canyon floor and one rim hike.

Panoramic view from Inspiration Point of the Bryce Amphitheater in Bryce Canyon National Park, with thousands of orange and white limestone hoodoos descending into the bowl-shaped canyon under a clear skyLeg 3: the hoodoos

Bryce Canyon

Best for
Day 5, sunrise over the amphitheater, and the Navajo Loop
Watch
At nearly 8,000 feet, Bryce runs cold and can hold snow into spring, even when Zion was warm.

Bryce is a short hop from Zion and adds dramatic high-elevation contrast. One night handles the rim viewpoints and a loop down among the hoodoos before the long drive east to Moab.

Panoramic view of Delicate Arch, the freestanding sandstone arch in Arches National Park, Utah, with the snow-capped La Sal Mountains in the distance under a clear skyLeg 4a: red-rock arches

Arches

Best for
Days 6 to 7, Delicate Arch, the Windows, and Devils Garden
Watch
Midday summer heat and parking are the constraints. Confirm the park's current entry rules, since seasonal timed-entry systems have varied year to year.

Moab is the central anchor of the loop. Arches is minutes from town, so split your Moab nights between it and neighboring Canyonlands.

Canyonlands

Best for
Day 7 to 8, Island in the Sky, Mesa Arch, and Grand View Point
Watch
The Needles and Maze districts are separate long drives. Island in the Sky has almost no water and serious exposure.

Canyonlands' Island in the Sky district is a 45-minute drive from Moab and rewards short walks with enormous canyon views. It pairs naturally with Arches from the same base.

Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings set into a sandstone alcove at Mesa Verde in warm afternoon light.Leg 5: the cliff dwellings

Mesa Verde

Best for
Day 9, Cliff Palace, and the Mesa Top Loop
Watch
The famous cliff-dwelling tours are ticketed and seasonal, so check availability ahead. The mesa-top road is long and winding.

Mesa Verde is about 2.5 hours from Moab and brings a different kind of stop: ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings instead of rock formations. One night covers the main loop and a ranger-led tour.

Wide panoramic view of the colorful badland hills and eroded geological formations of Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona under a clear skyLeg 6: the closing detour

Petrified Forest

Best for
Day 10, the Painted Desert and the fossilized log fields
Watch
It is a day-use park with no in-park lodging and gates that close in the evening, so time your arrival and base in Holbrook.

Petrified Forest sits along I-40 on the way back toward Phoenix or Las Vegas, which makes it a natural final stop. The park is drive-through friendly with short trails among ancient petrified wood.

Planning notes

Loop counter-clockwise from Las Vegas

Grand Canyon, then north into Utah for Zion and Bryce, east to Moab, then south through Mesa Verde and Petrified Forest brings you back toward Las Vegas or Phoenix. The ring shape means almost no backtracking.

Anchor the middle in Moab for three nights

Arches, Canyonlands, and the long drives on either side make Moab the trip's hub. Book it early, since it fills fast and the two parks together justify the longer stay.

Trim to a half loop if you have one week

A strong 7 to 8 day version drops Mesa Verde and Petrified Forest and runs Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Arches, and Canyonlands. Add the two eastern parks only when you have the full two weeks.

Go in spring or fall and watch the monsoon

April to May and September to October are ideal. From July into September, afternoon monsoon storms raise flash-flood risk in slot canyons and washes, so check forecasts and avoid narrow drainages when storms threaten.
