Top things to do

  • Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches

Classic outer-Cape Atlantic beaches with big surf, dunes, and the famous Nauset Light nearby.

  • Great Island Trail

A long sand-and-marsh hike out a peninsula in Wellfleet, exposed and demanding in soft sand, but one of the best walks on the Cape.

  • Province Lands and the bike trails

Paved bike paths wind through dunes and forest near Provincetown, with the visitor center and dune overlooks at the tip of the Cape.

  • Nauset Marsh and the kettle ponds

Calm-water paddling and swimming in the freshwater kettle ponds, a gentler alternative to the cold open Atlantic.

How long to spend

Anchor the day around Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches

Put the access rule first: shuttle, parking, timed-entry, or reservation windows should decide the order of the day. For one day in Cape Cod National Seashore, make Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches the non-negotiable, add Great Island Trail only if the first stop runs clean, and keep Province Lands and the bike trails as the flexible finish.

  1. 1Start with Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches: Classic outer-Cape Atlantic beaches with big surf, dunes, and the famous Nauset Light nearby.
  2. 2Add Great Island Trail: A long sand-and-marsh hike out a peninsula in Wellfleet, exposed and demanding in soft sand, but one of the best walks on the Cape.
  3. 3Use Province Lands and the bike trails as the optional finish, not as a reason to rush the whole day.

Where to stay

Base yourself in an outer-Cape town: Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown all sit along the seashore. Provincetown has the most lodging, food, and nightlife; the smaller towns are quieter. For camping, the seashore itself has none, so the main public option is Nickerson State Park in Brewster, plus private campgrounds across the Cape.
